Lusaka, Zambia to the Western Cape, South Africa
Homeland International explores how local knowledge, airline expertise and careful coordination enabled a sensitive repatriation following a fatal hippo attack on the Zambezi.
Repatriation is rarely as straightforward as moving from one airport to another. While the most obvious route is often the one initially presented to a client, experience in international repatriation can reveal alternative options that make a significant difference to a bereaved family.
Homeland International was recently approached by an African assistance company to manage the repatriation of mortal remains following a fatal hippo attack on the Zambezi. The deceased needed to be repatriated from Lusaka, Zambia, to George in South Africa’s Western Cape.
At first glance, the route presented a significant logistical challenge. There are no international flights from Lusaka directly to George, while the alternative solutions initially offered to the client involved transporting the deceased only as far as Johannesburg. For a family whose final destination was George, this would have meant a lengthy onward journey by road – adding considerable time and complexity to an already difficult situation.
For Homeland International, however, the question was not simply where a flight could land, but how the deceased could reach the intended destination as efficiently and appropriately as possible.
Finding a route where others could not
The case was referred to Homeland International’s experienced team, including Malcolm Van Den Berg, Head of Africa. His extensive experience of repatriation across the continent was particularly valuable in assessing the available options.
The team identified that Airlink could provide a viable routing via Johannesburg, with a connecting flight onwards to George. Rather than treating Johannesburg as the final destination, Homeland International looked at the complete journey and identified an airline solution that would allow the remains to travel much closer to the family’s intended destination.
This is an important distinction in international repatriation. Flight schedules and published passenger routes do not necessarily tell the whole story. The requirements surrounding the transportation of mortal remains, including the aircraft type, cargo capacity and packaging requirements, must all be considered before a route can be confirmed.
In this case, the team’s experience proved particularly important.
The coffin, not the casket
One of the practical considerations was the size of the aircraft operating the onward Airlink service to George.
The usual approach for an international repatriation may involve a casket that is appropriately prepared and crated for transportation. However, the aircraft operating the required route had specific cargo limitations.
Homeland International’s team recognised that a casket would not be suitable for the aircraft. Instead, the deceased needed to be transported in a coffin and wrapped rather than crated. This ensured that the remains could meet the airline’s requirements while also fitting within the available aircraft capacity.
This was a relatively small but critical detail. Without the team’s knowledge of the airline’s operational requirements and the practicalities of transporting mortal remains on smaller aircraft, the proposed routing may not have been possible.
The case demonstrated once again that successful repatriation depends on more than finding a flight. It requires an understanding of how the flight, aircraft, cargo restrictions and preparation of the deceased all need to work together.
Keeping everyone informed
The logistical challenges were only one part of the case.
With family members located in South Africa, the UK and Australia, communication was another important consideration. In a sensitive case involving a sudden and traumatic death, uncertainty can add considerably to the distress already being experienced by those waiting for their loved one to return home.
Homeland International’s 24/7 team therefore maintained regular communication with the relevant parties throughout the repatriation. Updates were provided as arrangements progressed, ensuring that the assistance company and family members had visibility of the case and understood the next steps.
For the family, this meant having a clear point of contact despite being spread across three countries and multiple time zones. For the assistance company, it meant having confidence that the operational details were being managed and that any developments could be communicated promptly.
A successful journey home
Once the necessary arrangements had been put in place, the repatriation proceeded smoothly.
The remains travelled from Lusaka to Johannesburg before connecting onwards to George, bringing the deceased significantly closer to the family’s intended final destination than the Johannesburg-only option initially available.
While the journey itself was ultimately uneventful, the outcome depended on the decisions made before the flight. Identifying the Airlink connection, understanding the limitations of the aircraft and adapting the preparation of the deceased accordingly were all essential to making the route work.
The case highlights an important aspect of international repatriation: sometimes the most effective solution is not immediately obvious.
For assistance companies, having access to a specialist repatriation provider with extensive regional knowledge can make the difference between accepting a less suitable route and finding a practical solution that better meets the needs of the family.
In this case, Homeland International’s knowledge of African repatriation, combined with its understanding of airline requirements and its ability to coordinate a complex family communication chain, enabled a sensitive repatriation to be completed smoothly – from Lusaka to George, rather than simply to the nearest major international gateway.
Ultimately, the objective in any repatriation remains the same: to bring someone home with dignity, while removing as much of the logistical burden as possible from those left behind. Sometimes achieving that objective requires looking beyond the obvious route and drawing on experience to find a way forward.

I am profoundly grateful to Homeland International, in particular, to Richard Benn, for their exceptional care in repatriating our Father's ashes from London to Manila. Navigating the complex legal demands of both the UK authorities and the Philippine Embassy seemed overwhelming, but their team handled everything seamlessly. They managed the entire process door-to-door, secured the Consular Mortuary Certificate, cleared customs in Manila, and gave our family complete peace of mind. My regular communication with Richard was compassionate and clear during an incredibly difficult time. I highly recommend their professional services to any family needing international repatriation. Thank you.Posted on Google
