How Body Repatriation from Portugal works:

Homeland International provides everything required for the repatriation of your loved one from Portugal. Typically, a repatriation usually takes between 5 to 7 days however in certain situations, such as if a coroner or the police are involved, this may extend the time frame slightly.

Once in our care, our team will care for the person who has died, complete the embalming which is required for repatriation and prepare the coffin for international transportation back home.

Documentation Required for Repatriation from Portugal

  • Passport of the deceased person
  • Death Certificate
  • Homeland International Authorisation Form (this will be sent to you for completion)
  • There may be a requirement for additional paperwork from you, we will advise you if anything else is required when starting repatriation arrangements

We are usually able to arrange flights back to most international destinations from airports in Portugal such as Faro, Funchal, Lisbon and Porto. On arrival back to the destination country, Homeland International can support with the customs clearance at the airport and the transport back to the home town/city. We can arrange repatriation of remains from anywhere in Portugal including:

Madeira and the Azores

We are able to support the repatriation from Madeira and the Azores and there is usually no need for your loved one to be transported to mainland Portugal. Even if the death is referred to the police, the investigations are usually able to be completed in Funchal, Madeira or the Azores. Flights are usually available from Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport in Funchal, Madeira to most international destinations, flights from the Azores will usually connect via Lisbon. If for some reason flights are unavailable from Madeira or the Azores we can transport to Lisbon or other international airports for a connecting flight.
